Which Luggage Measurements Should OEM Buyers Lock Before Sampling?

A practical measurement map for comparing case size, travel footprint, usable interior space and assembled samples before a specification becomes expensive to change.

OEM luggage measurements are rarely just one number. The product may be sold as a 20-inch, 24-inch or 28-inch case, but an OEM sample still needs a more useful measurement record. The outer shell, wheels, handle, zipper or frame, lining and expansion section can all change how the finished case fits a carton, a shelf, a vehicle or a customer's packing routine.

The best time to lock these measurements is before sampling, while the factory can still separate a design decision from an assembly variation. Buyers do not need to guess a universal tolerance. They do need to define what is measured, where the tape starts and ends, whether wheels and handles are included, and which version is the approved reference.

Short answer

Lock four linked groups before sampling: closed body dimensions, the complete travel footprint, usable interior dimensions and the conditions used to measure them. A sample is ready for approval when each number can be traced to the same drawing, physical reference and measurement method.

Use luggage measurements as a map, not one size number

Before a sample is made, place the important dimensions on one approval sheet. This avoids a common mismatch: the buyer approves the shell size while the factory is working to a packed height that includes wheels, or an internal volume that excludes a lining pocket.

Separate the case body from the travel footprint

The shell is a useful reference, but it is not the whole suitcase. A buyer comparing two samples should make clear whether the published size describes the molded body or the assembled product.

Closed body size

Measure the case in the same closed condition each time. State whether the measurement follows the shell's widest points, includes a frame or zipper edge, and how curved corners are treated. The point is not to make the number look smaller. It is to make the number reproducible between the drawing, the sample and the product page.

Ready-to-use footprint

Measure the assembled case with wheels, fixed side handles and the trolley handle in the condition relevant to the selling claim. A recessed wheel may add little to the shell width but still affect clearance in a carton or on a luggage rack. A telescopic handle can change the height when extended, so the sheet should identify the stored and operating positions instead of leaving the factory to infer them.

Check the inside after the outside is fixed

Two cases with the same outside dimensions can offer different packing space. Wheel housings, a divider panel, zipper tracks, corner reinforcement and a deep lining pocket all take room away from the simple shell rectangle.

Usable interior, not shell volume

Record the interior dimensions in the condition a buyer will use: the lining fitted, the divider closed or open as specified, and the compression system in its normal position. If the product has a shaped corner or a raised wheel area, show that loss in a sketch or photo rather than implying a perfectly rectangular space.

Expansion needs its own line

For an expandable case, keep the unexpanded and expanded conditions separate. The zipper may add depth without changing the shell length or width, and the lining may pull differently when the gusset is open. The approval sheet should identify which condition supports the standard size claim and which one is an optional capacity feature.

Compare samples on the same setup

A measurement difference is only useful when the setup is controlled. When the first sample arrives, photograph the reference points and repeat the process for the next version.

  1. Use the same flat surface and place the case in the same orientation.
  2. Use the same closed, expanded or loaded condition stated on the sheet.
  3. Measure the same points, including or excluding wheels and handles exactly as defined.
  4. Record the sample code, date, tool and person who measured it.
  5. Photograph any dimension that depends on a curved edge, flexible fabric or a moving part.

This record also helps separate design change from assembly variation. A different shell drawing, wheel set or lining pattern may explain a real change. A different measuring position may only create a false one.

Use the approval sheet to control the next sample

The final sheet should let a factory and a buyer discuss one version without relying on memory. Keep the approved reference image beside the dimensions and mark each field as proposed, measured or approved.

Before approving the sample, confirm:

  • the size claim and the body measurement are clearly separated;
  • the assembled footprint includes the parts relevant to storage and handling;
  • interior measurements describe usable space after lining and divider construction;
  • expanded and unexpanded conditions are not mixed in one number;
  • the drawing, sample photos and measurement method point to the same version;
  • any open dimension is assigned to the next sample review rather than silently assumed.

Ask the factory for a traceable size review

A clear OEM luggage dimension sheet does more than support a product page. It gives the factory a shared reference for shell tooling, component selection, lining construction, carton planning and later sample changes.
